Torture in Your Backyard: Order the DVD Today

Dear Friends,New NRCAT videoAs the New York Times reported this week, a growing number of states are recognizing that reliance on prolonged solitary confinement is not only ineffective and destructive, it’s expensive. The National Religious Campaign Against Torture (NRCAT) is encouraged to see growing national debate about the abuse and immorality o! f prolonged solitary confinement and a growing number of faith-based state campaigns to end prolonged solitary confinement. Now is a crucial time for you to raise the issue with your congregation. NRCAT has a new resource for you to do just that.

NRCAT created a 20-minute film, Solitary Confinement: Torture in Your Backyard, as a resource for congregations to learn about the destructive use of prolonged solitary confinement and to engage people of faith to call for an end to prolonged solitary confinement in their state. The film features several former prisoners discussing the mental harm they endured as a result of being held in solitary confinement. Sarah Shourd, one of the three hikers captured in Iran, who spent 14 months in solitary confinement also describes her experience. The film also highlights how the religious community in Maine helped secure a seventy percent reduction in the number of Maine prisoners held in solitary confinement.

We urge you to organize a screening of Solitary Confinement: Torture in Your Backyard. Use our faith-based discussion guides to facilitate a discussion about solitary confinement after the film. The DVD order form, a petition version of NRCAT’s Statement Against Prolonged Solitary Confinement, fliers to advertise your congregation’s screening, and faith-based discussion guides are all available at www.nrcat.org/backyard. Be sure to fill out this brief survey to tell us about your viewing or plans to host a viewing.

Help us meet our goal to have 500 showings of the film in 2012 and give a voice to the tens of thousands of prisoners held in solitary confinement cells across the country.

Sincerely,

Linda Gustitus, President
Rev. Richard L. Killmer, Executive Director

National Religious Campaign Against Torture (NRCAT)

Book Reading and Study Group

Monday evenings 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. April 16, 23, 30 and May 7

Buddhist Center at 860 West Broad Street

Group Leader – Ms. Ernestine Jackson

Sponsored by
Education Committee of the Interfaith Association of Central Ohio
SGI-USA the Buddhist Association for Peace, Culture and Education

Buddhism, one of the major religions of the world, is based on the teachings of Siddhatha Gautama. Founded in northern India around 563 to 460 BCE, there are approximately 376 million adherents and it is the fourth largest religion after Christianity, Islam and Hinduism. It is widespread in the far East and is now present in North American communities.

This Book Study Group focusing on Buddhism will include a short book and various articles directed at helping participants get a glimpse of the intricacies and beauty of this religious tradition.

Participants will have specific reading assignments for each weekly meeting where they will be invited to highlight 3 – 4 ideas or concepts to share with the group. The conversation is expected to be free flowing and open-ended with participants learning from each other’s discoveries in the material they are reading. Each session will begin promptly at 7:00 p.m. and will conclude at 8:30.

Book – Study Co-Chair Ernestine Jackson has been a practicing Nichiren Buddhist for 30 years. Professionally, her background is in public policy, having worked in the public and private sector on issues such as affordable housing; the pros/cons and needs of the sandwich generation; encouraging government officials to evaluate the benefits of returning neighborhoods to places where families can live, work and play within walking distance of their home. She was employed at Bank One Corporation for several years. Currently she provides consultant services to nonprofit organizations in the Columbus area.

Afghan Children’s Tour in Columbus, March 11

Afghan Children’s Tour of America
Sunday, March 11, 2012, 2:00 PM

Hosted by and at Noor Islamic Cultural Center (5100 Wilcox Road, Dublin, Ohio)

The Social Justice Task Force of the Interfaith Association of Central Ohio is organizing a group of Afghan youth in Columbus, with the support of the Noor Islamic Cultural Center.

Years of war in the Afghanistan society has impacted millions with economic dislocation, internal displacement, family disintegration, and community decay, can we learn from this experience.

Listen to the children!!
Their stories are for this generation to learn and live differently.
Can we embrace that change of culture and politics to move toward nonviolence and justice?
IACO members are encouraged to support this important work of AFCECO by contributing $20.12 or any other amount that one is able. Make checks out to CharityHelp International, Inc. (the US non-profit that supports AFCECO – “AFCECO Children’s America Tour” should appear on the memo line of any checks), and send it to the IACO office, or better yet, bring it with you on Sunday.
